ABOUT THE PLAY
Could a marriage survive accusations of sexual harassment and assault? In Your Own Backyard explores the grey area of a topic where people want black-and-white answers. What is forgivable? What isn't? Where is the line and why is it so hard to define? This is not a #MeToo play addressing the issue as we understood it a decade ago. Set in 2026, IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD examines the contemporary landscape of sexism and misogyny, at a moment when political polarization across Canada and North America is reshaping public discourse around gender, power, and accountability. CHARACTERS
MAN: 40-50s, happy-go-lucky, “nice guy,” bubbly.
WOMAN: 40-50s, driven, meticulous, high-achiever.
GIRL (Not currently accepting submissions): 17, independent, go-getter, people-pleaser.
Sides will be given to those invited to audition.
DATES
Submission Deadline: Friday October 30th at 11:59pm.
In-person Auditions: Saturday November 7th, day time and evening availability, in Toronto. Please indicate any conflicts for this date.
Rehearsal Period: January 4th to January 20th, Monday to Friday with some weekends and evenings required, in Toronto. Please indicate any conflicts for this period.
Show Dates: January 21st to January 30th with a total of 12 shows, weekday evenings and weekend matinees, at The Theatre Centre BMO Incubator space (1115 Queen St West)
COMPENSATION
$1,000 honorarium for the rehearsal period and show run
